The Ohio BWC Has Begun Issuing Dividend Checks for the 2022 Policy Year to Employers

The BWC has begun distributing dividend payments to eligible employers for the 2022 policy year — money that flows directly back to your business simply for maintaining your coverage. Here's what you should know about the dividend, how eligibility works, and what to do when your check arrives.

What Is the BWC Employer Dividend?

The Ohio BWC periodically returns a portion of collected premiums to employers when the fund performs well — whether due to lower-than-expected claims, strong investment returns, or sound fund management. These dividends are separate from other BWC savings programs like group rating or safety grants. They are issued directly to employers who held an active BWC policy during the applicable coverage period, in this case the 2022 policy year.

The dividend is not something you apply for. The BWC calculates each employer's share based on premiums paid during the policy year and distributes checks automatically to eligible accounts.

Who Is Eligible to Receive a Check?

Not every employer automatically receives a dividend. The BWC applies eligibility criteria that typically include factors such as:

  • Holding an active, compliant BWC policy during the 2022 policy year

  • Being current on any premiums, fees, or balances owed to the BWC

  • If your account had outstanding balances or lapses in coverage, the BWC may apply your dividend toward what is owed rather than issuing a check. Employers who have since closed their business but held a qualifying 2022 policy may still be eligible — confirm your mailing address is current with the BWC to avoid missing your payment.

What Should You Do When Your Check Arrives?

Receiving a dividend is straightforward, but it's worth being intentional about how you use it. A few practical steps:

  • Verify the amount. Log in to your BWC account or contact the BWC directly to confirm the dividend calculation matches your records.

  • Consult your accountant. BWC dividends may be treated as taxable income depending on how you previously deducted your workers' comp premiums. Your tax advisor can clarify the treatment for your specific situation.

  • Consider reinvesting in safety. Some employers choose to put dividend funds toward workplace safety improvements, training, or equipment — investments that can reduce future claims and premiums.

  • Update your records. Note the payment in your financial records for accurate bookkeeping and future premium comparisons.

Keep an Eye on Your BWC Account Throughout the Year

Dividend checks are a welcome reminder that staying on top of your BWC account has real financial benefits. Beyond dividends, Ohio employers have access to a range of BWC programs designed to lower premiums and support workplace safety — including group rating, group retrospective, and safety intervention grants. Regularly reviewing your account ensures you aren't leaving savings on the table.

If you're unsure whether your business is set up to take full advantage of BWC programs, now is a good time to take a closer look at your coverage and risk management strategy.
